CAS No. 335-56-8 is chemically known as bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane, which is colorless to pale yellow liquid with a specific gravity at 15°C range from 1.167-1.169. It has a boiling point at 156°C and a flash point of 73°C.
It is a common intermediate for numerous organic syntheses, such as alkylating agents, corrosion inhibitors, surfactants, lubricants, plasticizers, polyelectrolytes, emulsifiers, and soil release agents. Its derivatives are widely applied in water treatment, baking industry, coating industry, and automotive industry, constructing industry, and cleaning industry.
Its most primary use is as a substitute for 1,2-dichloroethane and a constituent in cleaning products and fuel oils. bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane can be used as a reagent, coupling agent, esterifying agent, emulsifying agent in liquid detergents, rubber, metalworking fluids and various industries.
It is miscible with water to form an aqueous solution. Also, it can react with alcohols, halogenated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons to form corresponding derivatives.
Due to its corrosive nature, it should be stored in a well-ventilated, isolated place and away from sources of ignition. It should be handled only in conditions compliant with appropriate regulations and relevant industry standards. Due to the potential health and environmental risks, proper protective clothing and respirator should be used when using this chemical.
