Perfluoropentyl-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylether, also known as perfluoropentyl ether (CAS No. 16627-71-7), is a colorless, volatile and highly flammable liquid with a mild ether-like odor. It is soluble in water and forms a stable azeotrope with water.
Perfluoropentyl-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylether is mainly used as a heat transfer fluid, a fluorine-containing solvent, and a fluorochemical intermediate. As a heat transfer fluid, it is used in air conditioners, refrigerators, and heat pumps, and is commonly used in the production of propylene glycol. As a fluorine-containing solvent, it is used in the manufacture of fluorinated polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene and polychlorotrifluoroethylene. As a fluorochemical intermediate, it is used in the production of fluoroelastomers, such as fluorosilicone and fluorocarbon.
Perfluoropentyl-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylether is also used in a variety of other applications, such as in the pharmaceutical industry, as a degreasing agent, in fire protection systems, and in the manufacture of electronic components. In addition, it is used as a propellant in aerosols, as a surfactant in lubricants, and as a blowing agent in foam plastics.
Perfluoropentyl-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylether is a highly toxic compound and exposure to it should be avoided. It is also known to be a highly flammable substance and contact with sources of ignition or open flames should be avoided. In addition, it is highly reactive and should not be mixed with other chemicals. When handling this compound, proper safety equipment, such as gloves, protective eyewear and a respirator, should be worn. Furthermore, it should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area and away from sources of heat and light.
