Trifluorotoluene (CAS NO: 171611-11-3), also known as 3-Trifluorotoluene, is a colorless liquid azo compound. It is a fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbon with a chemical formula of C7H5F3.
Trifluorotoluene is used primarily as a solvent, including for rubber, polymer, and paint industries. It is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical agents and for electroplating as a catalyst. It has a boiling point of 88.62 °C and a melting point of -32.2 °C.
Trifluorotoluene has a pleasant smell and is less volatile and pungent than other C7HxF3 compounds. It is easily soluble in organic solvents, except for those containing carbon tetrachloride. Inhalation with high concentrations of Trifluorotoluene can lead to intoxication, neurological damage and death due to respiratory failure.
Trifluorotoluene must be stored at temperatures below 25ºC and separate from incompatible substances. Additionally, it must be protected from strong oxidizing agents and be handled with care to reduce the potential for fires and explosions. Care must also be taken to ensure that it is kept away from children, pets and food.
