2-Chloroethanol, with the CAS registry number 98-80-6, is an organic compound and also a colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor. It is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. It is mainly used as a solvent and an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.
2-Chloroethanol is prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with hydrochloric acid or chlorine. 2-Chloroethanol is also used as a reagent for the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce drugs such as chloramphenicol, phenobarbital, and chlorpromazine.
2-Chloroethanol is also used in the production of other chemicals such as ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monochlorohydrin, and ethylene glycol dichlorohydrin. It is also used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, dyes, and resins.
2-Chloroethanol is toxic and can be absorbed through the skin and respiratory tract. Exposure to large amounts of 2-chloroethanol can lead to irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, as well as symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Long-term exposure to 2-chloroethanol can cause neurological and liver damage.
