3-Amino-2-methylbenzoic acid (Cas No.:81665-82-9) is a colourless solid that is an important intermediate in the production of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and dyes.
The compound has a melting point of 195-206°C, a specific gravity of 1.356 g/cm3 and a pH of 3.2-4.1. It is soluble in water and hot ethyl acetate, and slightly soluble in cold ethanol and hot methanol.
The compound can be synthesised by the reaction of isopropylbenzene, hydrochloric acid and acetic anhydride in an aqueous medium. Its reaction with N-methyl aniline gives 3-N-methyl-2-aminobenzoic acid. It undergoes oxidation with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature to give 3-hydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid. This can be further reacted with hydrazine to give 3-amino-2-methylbenzoic acid hydrazide.
3-Amino-2-methylbenzoic acid is used in the synthesis of agrochemicals such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. It is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, such as Pyrazolone dyes, and pharmaceuticals such as glipizide, meclizine and tetracycline.
3-Amino-2-methylbenzoic acid is considered to be stable under normal storage and handling conditions, and is not known to be toxic or an environmental hazard.
