Sodium Aescinate is an aescin derivative and natural triterpene glycoside isolated from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) seed extract. It has been used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antipruritic, and antithrombotic properties. It is also known to reduce the release of certain cytokines in the blood that cause inflammation, reduce the leaching of histaminase and provide astroglial protection in the cells. It can be used in a variety of ways including topical application, oral administration and injection. It has been incorporated into many formulations including ointments, suppositories and capsules.
Sodium Aescinate works as a vasoactive and anti-inflammatory substance, its anti-inflammatory action is attributed to its inhibition of the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines released during stress and tissue damage. It exerts a direct cytoprotective action on endothelial cells by inhibiting platelet aggregation and decreasing permeability, thus reducing inflammation and thrombus formation. In particular, Sodium Aescinate has shown clinical effectiveness in reducing the signs and symptoms of ischemia, chronic venous insufficiency, edema and microcirculation.
Sodium Aescinate is well tolerated; however large doses can cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea and vomiting. It is important to consult your physician before incorporating Sodium Aescinate into your medical regimen.
