1,3-Butanediol, commonly known as 1,3-BDO, is a colorless and odorless organic compound with the chemical formula C4H10O2. It is a valuable chemical intermediate used as a building block in the production of a wide range of products, including plastics, solvents, and pharmaceuticals. 1,3-BDO is a clear, colorless, and hygroscopic liquid with a melting point of −50°C and a boiling point of 204°C. It is miscible with water, alcohols, and most organic solvents.

1,3-Butanediol is produced industrially by the hydrogenation of acetylene which is catalyzed by metal oxide catalysts. It is also produced by fermentation of glucose or sucrose, using bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, and by the hydrolysis of epoxybutane. It is widely used as a starting material for the production of polyesters, polyurethanes, and other polymers. It is also used as a solvent, a dispersing agent, and a plasticizer. It is also used in the production of glycerol, gamma-butyrolactone, solketal, and tetrahydrofuran.

In the pharmaceutical industry, 1,3-BDO is used as a chiral resolving agent, as a starting material for the synthesis of other pharmaceuticals such as albendazole, clotrimazole, and flufenamic acid, as well as in the manufacture of speciality chemicals. It is also used in the production of food additives and fragrances.

1,3-Butanediol is toxic if ingested and can cause irritation to the eyes and skin. It is classified as a hazardous material and should be handled with care. It is important to wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment when handling 1,3-Butanediol and to follow safe handling procedures.
