Sevelamer Carbonate, CAS No. 702-98-7
Sevelamer Carbonate, CAS No. 702-98-7, is a semi-synthetic white powder obtained through the treatment of carbon black, salt and alkali. The compound has molecular formula C24H26O14N2 and molecular weight 566.48. It is slightly soluble in water and insoluble in many organic solvents such as ethanol, propylene glycol and ethyl acetate.
Sevelamer carbonate is primarily used in laboratory and blood research studies in a variety of applications, ranging from cancer cell viability analysis to hemodialysis studies. It is also used in the water treatment industry as a cationic filtering agent to reduce total hardness of water sources, as well as for cleaning condensate systems. Furthermore, sevelamer carbonate is used as an anticaking agent in the food industry and a polishing agent in the petroleum industry.
In terms of healthcare industry applications, sevelamer carbonate is predominantly used to control electrolytes in hemodialysis cases. It binds with non-absorbed ionic electrolytes and helps modify serum phosphorus levels in the bloodstream, thus maintaining renal balance and reducing renal complications due to end stage renal diseases. In addition, it has been found to be particularly useful for reduction of calcium-based phosphate binding, as well as its role in positively impacting hyperlipidemia, anemia and metabolic acidosis.
Sevelamer carbonate also finds applications in the manufacture of adhesives and glue due to its ability to form strong bonds and improve the strength of adhesives. It is a common additive in printing inks as well and helps maintain consistent color, gloss and other special effects that are essential in the print industry. Finally, sevelamer carbonate is used in manufacturing paint and owing to its smoothness, it helps improve surface swells and produces crack-free coats.
