Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is an industrial chemical commonly used in the production of electronic components, flame retardants and plastics. It is used primarily as a flame retardant, as it is highly effective in suppressing or delaying the ignition of combustible materials. It is also used as a stabilizer in plastics and as an additive to epoxy resins used in the production of printed circuit boards.

TBBPA is composed of two brominated phenol molecules. It is a thermally stable, non-volatile, white to off-white powder with a molecular weight of 619.5 g/mol. It has a melting point of approximately 180 °C and a boiling point of approximately 465 °C. It has a relatively low water solubility and is insoluble in most organic solvents.

The use of TBBPA is regulated by the European Union's RoHS Directive, which restricts the presence of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. It is also included in the European Union's REACH regulation, which requires manufacturers to provide safety data sheets detailing the health and environmental risks associated with the use of the substance.

TBBPA may be released into the environment as a result of its production, use and disposal. It is a persistent organic pollutant, and its presence in the environment has been linked to adverse effects in both aquatic and terrestrial species. It has been shown to be toxic to aquatic organisms, such as fish, and can accumulate in the organs of animals, including mammals.

Given its use in the production of electronic components, TBBPA is an important chemical for the electronics industry. It is essential to ensure the safety of the products and to protect the environment from the potentially hazardous effects of its use.
