Description:
Benzyl Alcohol is a colorless transparent liquid with a slight aromatic odor, boiling point 205 °C, flash point 97 °C. It is miscible with water and ethanol, but insoluble in ether, chloroform and benzene. It is a weak base, and reacts with strong acid to form a corresponding salt. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the perfume and flavor industry and can also be used as a raw material for medicine and dye intermediates.
The most common use of benzyl alcohol is as a preservative and stabilizer in cosmetics, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used in the manufacture of benzalkonium chloride, which is used in topical medications and as a preservative and surfactant in pharmaceutical ophthalmics. Benzyl alcohol is also used in the textile industry as a wetting agent, and in the manufacture of adhesives and inks.
In the food industry, benzyl alcohol is used as a flavoring agent, preservative, and as a component of food colors. It is also used as an insect repellent and as a preservative in a variety of products, including disinfectants, antifreeze, and oils.
Benzyl alcohol is also used in the production of polymers, rubber and plastics. It is used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical, printing, and photographic industries, as well as in the manufacture of inks, dyes, and paint. It is also used as a substitute for ethyl alcohol in the production of perfumes, soaps, and detergents.
