Benzyl Benzoate (CAS NO : 14694-95-2) is an organic compound composed of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. It is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a faint aromatic odour, having an almost sweet, balsamic odour and a burning taste.
Benzyl Benzoate is used as a plasticizer for cellulose and synthetic resins, in perfume and fragrances, in nail polish, and in toiletries. It is also used as an insect repellent in paints and lacquers, and as a preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products. In the pharmaceutical industry, Benzyl Benzoate is used as a solvent and as an anesthetic. It is also used in manufacturing insecticides, insect repellents, and antiseptics.
Because of its insect repellent properties, Benzyl Benzoate is often used in the formulation of mosquito repellents, flea and tick collars, and other insect repellent products. It is also used in the manufacture of pesticides, insecticides, and disinfectants.
Benzyl Benzoate has low environmental toxicity and is not expected to bioaccumulate in the environment. It is also low in acute toxicity and is not skin-irritating. However, long-term exposure may cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Consequently, Benzyl Benzoate should be used with care and in accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
