Cas No.1072-85-1 is a chemical compound of formula C4H4O2, known as maleic anhydride. It is a white solid with a pungent odour, and is produced industrially via the oxidation of benzene or butane. Maleic anhydride is an important industrial chemical, being used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, plasticizers, lubricants, surfactants, and other products.

Maleic anhydride is a highly reactive compound and is used in a variety of reactions. It is used as an acid catalyst in aldol condensations and in the Diels-Alder reaction. It forms a 1:1 adduct with amines, which can be used to prepare amides, esters and amine salts. It can be used to produce maleamic acid, which is used as a crosslinking agent in the production of alkyd resins and as an intermediate in the production of dyes.

Maleic anhydride is also used as a raw material for the production of fumaric acid, which is used in food and beverage applications as an acidulant. It is also used in the production of polyester resins and plasticizers, where it is reacted with alcohols or amines to form esters. Maleic anhydride is also used as a starting material for the production of surfactants, lubricants, and other specialty chemicals.

Maleic anhydride is used as a polymerization catalyst in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and in the production of unsaturated polyester resins. It is also used as a hardener in the production of epoxy resins.

The toxicity of maleic anhydride is low and it is classified as a non-carcinogenic substance. However, it should be handled with care due to its strong irritant properties. It should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from sources of ignition.
