Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda or lye, is a highly reactive alkaline chemical compound with the formula NaOH, and is represented by the CAS number 1067-33-0. It is a white, odorless crystalline solid in its pure form, but may also appear as a pale yellow color when contaminated with moisture or impurities.

Sodium hydroxide is one of the most widely used chemical compounds in the industrial sector, and is a major component of many manufacturing processes. It is used in the production of paper, textiles, soaps and detergents, as a drain cleaner, and in many other applications. It is also used in the manufacture of biodiesel, and to neutralize acids in many industrial processes.

In aqueous solutions, sodium hydroxide is a strong base with a pH of 14. It is highly soluble in water, and forms a viscous solution when mixed with water. It reacts with acids to form salt and water, and is also capable of forming a complex with some metals.

Sodium hydroxide is corrosive and can cause severe skin burns and eye irritation. It is toxic if ingested, and should be handled with care. It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area and kept away from sources of heat and open flame.
