CAS No:10139-58-9, also known as Sodium tert-Butoxide, is an inorganic compound which is a colorless to pale yellowish viscous liquid. It has a strong characteristic odor. This compound is very reactive and is soluble in most organic solvents. It has a unique combination of properties which make it an ideal intermediate for the production of various chemicals.

Sodium tert-Butoxide is primarily used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, adhesives, and other specialty products. It is a strong base, and an excellent nucleophile, making it a catalyst for a wide range of organic transformations. This base has been found to be an effective catalyst in a variety of acid-catalyzed organic reactions, such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation, amide and ester hydrolysis, and nitrile hydrolysis.

In addition to its use as a catalyst, Sodium tert-Butoxide is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, such as analgesics, antibacterials, and cardiovascular drugs. It is also used in the manufacture of other specialty products, such as adhesives, surfactants, corrosion inhibitors, and flame retardants.

Sodium tert-Butoxide is produced industrially by reacting tert-Butanol with sodium hydroxide in the presence of an aqueous medium. It is highly corrosive, and safety precautions should be taken when handling this compound. It is also flammable and should be stored in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.
