2-Chloroethanol, also known as Ethylene chlorohydrin and Ethylene glycol chlorohydrin, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with an ether-like odor. CAS No. 1009-43-4, it is an organic compound with the molecular formula C2H5ClO. It is a reactive intermediate in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, and surfactants.

2-Chloroethanol is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide and chlorine. It is a flammable, hazardous chemical with a flashpoint of 3 °C (37 °F). It is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether, and is highly reactive with strong oxidizers, acids and bases.

2-Chloroethanol is a versatile intermediate used in a variety of industrial and consumer products. It is used as a solvent in the manufacture of adhesives and inks; as a stabilizer in pharmaceuticals; as a reagent in organic synthesis; and as a monomer in the production of polymers such as polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, and polyacrylonitrile.

2-Chloroethanol is also used as a surfactant in emulsion polymerization and in the production of detergents, pesticides, and other cleaning agents. It is also used in the production of dyestuffs, rubber, and paint.

When used as a solvent, 2-Chloroethanol has a high solvency power, making it suitable for dilution and dissolution of a wide range of compounds. It is also used as a non-aqueous solvent for a variety of organic compounds, including pigments, dyes, resins, and waxes.

2-Chloroethanol is toxic and should be handled with care. Exposure to the chemical can cause skin and eye irritation, and inhalation can cause respiratory irritation. Prolonged exposure can cause central nervous system and liver damage, and long-term exposure is linked to increased cancer risk.
