Sodium nitrate (CAS No.: 10025-98-6), also named nitratine, Chile saltpeter, soda niter and nitratite, is an inorganic compound with the formula NaNO3. It is a white crystalline solid, highly soluble in water and melts at 307 °C. Sodium nitrate is mainly used as a fertilizer, and also as an explosive, food preservative, and a food additive.

In agriculture, sodium nitrate is used as a fertilizer and a soil conditioner, because it helps to increase crop yields and improve the fertility of the soil. It can also be used as a constituent in the manufacture of gunpowder, explosives, and fireworks.

In food industry, sodium nitrate is used as a preservative, color fixative, and flavor enhancer in processed meats and smoked fish. It is also used in cured meats, sausages, and hotdogs to prevent the growth of bacteria and food-borne illnesses.

Sodium nitrate is also used in some medicines to treat certain types of heart arrhythmias and to reduce the risk of stroke. It is a common reagent in chemistry laboratories, used for the preparation of nitrate salts, as well as in biological research.

It is important to note that sodium nitrate should be handled with caution, as it can be hazardous if overexposed. It should be stored in a cool, dry place and kept away from sources of ignition.
