Titanium Dioxide, CAS No. 756-13-8, Receives Positive Assessment from European Chemicals Agency

Titanium Dioxide, CAS No. 756-13-8, Receives Positive Assessment from European Chemicals Agency

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published a positive assessment of titanium dioxide, CAS No. 756-13-8, as part of its REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) program. The assessment concluded that the chemical is safe for use in the EU in its current form, and that no further restrictions are warranted.

Titanium dioxide is widely used in a variety of industrial and consumer products, including paints, coatings, plastics, paper, and food products. The chemical is also used as a white pigment in a range of cosmetics, including sunscreen and makeup.

The assessment by the ECHA was based on a thorough review of scientific literature and data on the chemical’s properties, as well as toxicological studies conducted by the agency itself. The agency concluded that while the chemical can cause irritation at certain concentrations, it is safe to use in its current form.

The ECHA’s assessment is the latest in a series of positive reviews of titanium dioxide, CAS No. 756-13-8. In 2018, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that the chemical does not pose a carcinogenic risk when used in its current form.

The ECHA’s positive assessment of titanium dioxide, CAS No. 756-13-8, is welcome news for the chemical industry, as it reinforces the safety of the chemical and ensures that it can continue to be used in the EU without additional restrictions. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of conducting thorough assessments of chemicals before introducing new regulations.
